The red-billed chough is a charismatic passerine bird, exhibiting a completely black plumage, pointy and curved beak, of red colouration on its legs, and wide and round wings. The young have an orange and shorter beak. It can grow to be 41 cm long and have 130 cm span.

The red-billed chough inhabits agricultural areas, pastures or other open spaces, rock formations, in the littoral or in the mountains.

All year long

The red-billed chough feeds on beetles, grasshoppers and, during winter, on vegetable matter, such as seeds and grains.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 120 and 300 couples.
