Located between Sintra Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, Colares region encloses the parishes of Colares, S. João das Lampas and S. Martinho, in Sintra district. Colares has been a Demarcated Region since 1908, being the westernmost wine area of continental Europe and the smallest still-wine producing region in Portugal.
The viticulture methods are very peculiar. Since the firthteenth century, the human ingenuity promoted the adaptation of the vines to the extreme conditions of the Colares microclimate (muscular Atlantic influence with strong, salty, winds and high humidity levels, impenetrable mists and deep sandy soils).
The cooperative winery at Colares (Adega Regional de Colares) was founded in 1931. It congregates today more than 50% of the total production, with an important social role in the region. Its beautiful building dates back to the late of nineteenth century, with an imposing interior housing wooden barrels, casks and vats totaling more than 1 million litters capacity. It is the maturing and aging place "par excellence" for the wines of this appellation.
Adega Regional de Colares understands the importance of protecting and preserving the Colares wine culture, its unique varieties and original viticulture methods. The ARColares philosophy rests on the imperative to ‘respect the Colares terroir’ and continue the tradition of its ancestors.
It produces temperamental wine from the Old World! Rediscover Colares!
