It is a London Planetree with a short and thick trunk, which was pruned as an arbor for shade, with long horizontal branches, forming a very large tree top perfectly round and leafy; the “crown” completely covers the central part, on the south side of Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty avenue), in Portalegre. This tree was planted in 1838 by the botanist José Maria Grande and is located in a circular area, supported or delimited by a small wall in granite. The land around it is coated with granite and has a lawn with park benches.

The local is a meeting point and there are held social events and political rallies and had served to proclaim the election winners. It is a monumental tree with great beauty and scenic effect that is part of the landscape and the city's memory.

Many years ago this tree was to be overthrown and was made a cut that reached half of the trunk diameter, but there was a people protest movement which prevented it.
