  • It is a large oak with great historical and cultural value for being associated with the cult of our Lady of Mercy. Every year the traditional procession held the 7 and 8 of September, between her chapel on Quinta de Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia and the Parish Halls, starts and ends at the Holy Oak, under which canopy the image is symbolically placed. The sociologist Moisés do Espírito Santo in his work "Fontes Remotas da Cultura Portuguesa", recognizes in the Holy Oak the true origin of the toponym Gonçalo, which derives from the word Carvalho (oak) and which was the subject of oracles. It is a centennial specimen of remarkable size, located at the entrance of the village of Gonçalo, known as "Holy Oak", which is subject of great fondness and devotion by the local population. It is a large oak with great historical and cultural value for being associated with the cult.
