  • It is a 16th-century tree, contemporaneous with the Age of Discoveries. In the vicinity of the chestnut tree there is a dolmen. In 1987, the chestnut tree produced half a ton of chestnuts. "This chestnut tree, due to inheritance issues, was sold to a lumber dealer who intended to turn it into wooden planks. It is said that the man, with an eye for business, didn't cut down the tree right away, waiting for a better offer. Then started a movement of revolt from the people of the parish who became aware of the sad fate waiting the chestnut tree. The  appeal was heard and the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Eng. Vasco Leónidas, determined that the Forestry Services would immediate forbid the felling of the tree, claiming that private interest should not be above the State interest, when it comes to saving a tree with 500 years. The outcry of the people allowed, therefore, to avoid the destruction of the secular chestnut tree, making this tree known as "the people's tree". Unfortunately the story does not end here, because in 2002 the famous chestnut tree was struck by lightning and today survives with difficulty.
